Live Foley Sounds for Salamanders

2025

Collaboration with Tamon Yashima

at Matjö - Raum für Kunst

Inside an abandoned swimming pool, there is a drain box where the salamander family resides inside the algae-covered water. An underwater camera captured the scene of their intimate and private 'water room.'

Tamon Yashima and I add sound layers to the muted video, following the movements inside it. I make sounds using water, a funnel, a sponge, and a bell, mainly in sync with the movements of the swimming aquatic salamanders. Tamon Yashima interprets the moving images musically, playing his self-made instrument and oboe.

The audience watches the video while Tamon Yashima and I perform the sound backstage. The same video repeats three times, and with each repetition, new sounds are added. In the first repetition, the foley sounds of water and objects are introduced. In the second repetition, the sound of a self-made instrument is added. In the third and final repetition, an oboe sound is layered in, bringing all the sounds together.
